Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State swept Colorado Christian 25-20, 25-23, 28-26 on Friday night in Golden, Colo., to advance to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship. The Roadrunners improved to 19-10, while CCU fell to 20-11.
Metro State will face Adams State at 5 p.m. in Golden as it seeks its sixth RMAC championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) led a very strong offensive attack with 13 kills each. Quijano hit .312 (13-3-32).
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had 10 kills.
Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) added seven kills and five blocks, hitting an efficient .429 (7-1-14).
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) helped the team hit .273 with 44 set assists.
Defensively,
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) dug up 24 attacks, helping limit the Cougars to a .137 hitting percentage.
Metro State trailed by a significant margin in all three sets, rallying each time for the win. The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 in the first set. Tied 19-19, Metro State scored six of the last seven points to take the first set, taking advantage of four CCU errors.
Colorado Christian led 5-0 and 8-1 in the second set but a ferocious rally put Metro State in front 17-15 after a 10-3 surge. Tied 23-23, Quijano and Hoagland put down back-to-back kills to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead in the match.
Again in the third, it was all CCU early as the Cougars took an 18-9 lead. Down 21-13, the Roadrunners scored seven of the next eight points to bring themselves within two points.
Metro State then fought off set point three times in a row to tie the set at 24-24. A two-point run put the Roadrunners in front 26-25. After a CCU kill, Hoagland and Heath finished off the match with a pair of kills and complete the incredible comeback.
