Women's Basketball: Metro State holds on to defeat Nebraska-Kearney 79-64

Box Score DENVER- Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.)'s 20 points helped Metro State defeat Nebraska-Kearney 79-64 on Saturday night.  The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 1-1 while the loss dropped the Lopers to 3-2 on the season.

Metro State was led by Lambrecht with 20 points.  Also scoring in double figures was Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) and Elena Velasquez (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) with 15 points each.  Tai Jensean also added 13 points to help the Roadrunners in victory. 

In the first half, the game stayed tight as the score with 10:14 left in the half was 12-12.  However, Metro State went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead and never looked back throughout the rest of the half in route to a 34-24 halftime lead.  Metro State's largest lead of the half was 11 points. 

In the first half, Metro State shot 32.4 percent (11-of-34) from the field including 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) from behind the arc.  However, the big advantage was Metro State shot 8-for-8 from the free throw line while Nebraska-Kearney shot only 2-for-6.

In the second half, Metro State was able to push its lead to 15 points with 14:05 left in the game.  Nebraska-Kearney responded with a 9-2 run to cut the Metro lead to 49-41. 

The key sequence in the game happened with just under a minute remaining as Metro State held a 71-63 lead with 51 seconds left.  On the play, Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) was fouled sending her to the line. 

Then the Nebraska-Kearney player argued with the ref to earn a 2 shot technical followed by the Loper coach arguing to also get a 2 shot technical. 

The Roadrunners were able to make all six of their foul shots to put the game out of reach as Metro State held on to win 79-64.

Overall for the game, Metro State shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the field and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from behind the arc.  The Roadrunners also shot a season high 93.8 percent (30-of-32) from the foul line to help put the game out of reach. 

Metro State will be back in action on Friday when the Roadrunners head to San Diego, Calif. to face UC-San Diego.
