Volleyball: Metro State wins sixth RMAC tournament championship

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State won its sixth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball tournament championship on Sunday, sweeping Adams State 25-16, 25-16, 25-15 on Saturday evening in Golden, Colo. The Roadrunners earned the automatic bid to play in their 14th consecutive NCAA tournament and improved to 20-10 on the season. ASU fell to 17-13.

It was the first RMAC tournament championship since 2009 for Metro State, despite making appearances in the finals in 2010 and 2011.

Tournament most valuable player Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had a match-high 11 kills and hit .360 (11-2-25), leading four players in double digits in kills. Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.), Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) all had 10 kills each and Heath and Hoagland each hit over .500.

Setter Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) joined Haun and Hoagland on the all-tournament team, dishing out 48 assists and leading the team to a .427 hitting percentage.

The Roadrunners hit .485 in the first set and had four players with three or more kills as the crushed the Grizzlies in the first. MSU Denver jumped out to a 12-5 lead.

Defensively, freshman Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) had a team-high 11 digs and Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 10.

The second set was more of the same for Metro State as the Roadrunners hit .441. MSU Denver broke out of a 3-2 deficit with five straight points and quickly built a 16-7 lead. ASU scored four straight points to cut the lead to 19-14, but Metro State quickly regained control to win 25-16.

MSU Denver cooled to a .361 hitting percentage in the third, but played its best defense, limiting the Grizzlies to just a .206 hitting percentage. A five-point run gave Metro State a 7-3 lead and it was all Roadrunners from there.
