Volleyball: Rally comes up just short at No. 15 Colorado Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State nearly pulled off an incredible comeback for the second straight night, but fell two points short at No. 15 Colorado Mines, losing 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 26-28, 18-16 in Golden, Colo., on Saturday. The Roadrunners fell to 15-10 overall and 11-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM improved to 22-4 and 16-1 with its 15th straight win, while remaining perfect at home. The Orediggers also clinched the RMAC regular season championship.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had 20 kills to pace the Roadrunners on offense. Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) provided 15, Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had 11 and Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) added 10. Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) had nine kills and nine blocks, just missing the first double-double with blocks at Metro State since 2008.

Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) kept the offense balanced again with 60 assists.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had a career-high 32 digs and Haun added 15, with Torr and Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) each digging up 13 attempts.

The Roadrunners struggled to slow the Orediggers offense in the first set as CSM hit .302. A five-point run gave Mines a 13-5 lead midway through the set.

Metro State never led in the second set, but twice tied the score at 13-13 and 14-14. CSM held set point at 24-21 before the Roadrunners ran off back-to-back points on a kill from Haun and a block by Quijano and Hoagland forced a timeout at 24-23. Mines came out of the timeout and crushed a ball down the right side to end the set.

The Orediggers looked to be pulling away in the third, but Metro State strung together three straight points to tie the score at 17-17. CSM made back-to-back errors to break a 21-21 tie and put the Roadrunners in control. Coming out of a timeout, Quijano put down back-to-back kills as Metro State took the set with the final four points. MSU Denver hit .316 in the third set led by six kills from Quijano, while limiting CSM to just .167.

The momentum carried into the fourth set for Metro State as it jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Mines used a four-point run to tie the score at 9-9, taking advantage of four Roadrunners errors. Mines went up 11-10, but never led after that. Two consecutive kills by Heath after a CSM service error gave the Roadrunners a 20-17 lead. Mines rallied to tie the set at 23-23. The teams traded points until Hoagland connected on a kill and then she and Torr combined for a block to force the fifth.

Metro State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth after an attack error, a block by Heath and a kill by Heath. Mines took its first lead of the set at 9-8, forcing a timeout. Out of the timeout, Heath crushed a kill cross-court and Fiatoa had a block to put the Roadrunners back in front. The roll continued as the Roadrunners scored five straight points to lead 13-9. The Orediggers rallied furiously, holding match point at 14-13, but a service error extended the match. Mines finally got two straight points to win 18-16.

Metro State will host Black Hills State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
