Box Score CANYON, Texas - Metro State fell 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11 to Regis University on Thursday afternoon in Canyon, Texas, in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Roadrunners ended their season at 20-11 overall, while the Rangers improved to 18-12.
Freshman
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) carried the offense, putting down a career-high 14 kills and hitting .345 (14-4-29). She also had six total blocks. Senior
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) finished with 13 kills, followed by
Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) with 12 and
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) with 11. Quijano and Hoagland each added six blocks.
Regis used a strong block on the outside, limiting the Roadrunners to a .122 hitting percentage thanks to nine total blocks. The blocks held Heath to a .100 hitting percentage and the team's other outside hitter,
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.), to a -.192 hitting percentage.
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 46 assists and 14 digs.
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led Metro State with a match-high 21 digs and
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had 13.
The Rangers came out strong, limiting Metro State to a nine attack errors and just nine kills in the first set, while hitting .270 in the frame.
Tied 21-21 in the second, the Roadrunners scored three straight points, including a pair of kills from Quijano, to pull away.
Metro State came out on fire in the third, leading 10-6, but the Rangers put together a furious rally, scoring 11 of the next 12 points to take a 17-11 lead and win 25-21.
Leading 15-14 in the fourth, Metro State pulled away with six of the next seven points to lead 21-15, hitting a match-best .343 in the frame. Heath had six kills in the fourth and Hoagland had four.
MSU Denver got out to a 6-5 lead in the fifth, but the Rangers scored nine of the next 11 points to hold match point. The Roadrunners fouth off the final point three times before Regis finally put down a kill.
Katie Klein led Regis with 16 kills.
It was Metro State's school-record 14th five-set match of the season, finishing with a 9-5 record in those matches. The Roadrunners fell to 0-7 all-time against Regis at the NCAA tournament.
