Box Score DENVER - Metro State was able to pull ahead late on Friday night as they defeated Colorado Mines 61-50 on the first game of homecoming weekend for the Roadrunners. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 15-6 overall and 13-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Orediggers to 12-10 overall and 9-7 in RMAC play.
Metro State was led by 16 points from
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) who started her 112th game for Metro State which puts her at number one all-time. Also scoring in double figures was
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) with 14 points. Leading the Roadrunners in rebounding were Valencia and Cassie Lambecht who had eight rebounds each. The eight rebounds for Lambecht was a career high for her.
In the first half, the game stayed tight as neither team was able to gain a lead of more than five points with the score being tied four times and four lead changes. Overall for the first half Metro State shot 39 percent including going 3-for-8 from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Roadrunners came out strong as they scored four points in the first 39 seconds of the second half. Metro State was able to use that momentum to help outscore Colorado Mines 37-26 in the second half.
In the final minutes, Metro State was able to hit its free throws to maintain the lead. With 3:21 left in the game, Metro State led 50-47 until
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) hit a 3-point attempt at the 2:20 mark for Metro to ahead 53-47.
Then after a missed 3-point attempt by Mines,
Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) made a lay-up at the 1:28 mark to allow the Roadrunners to pull ahead 55-47. Lambrecht then hit one of her two free throws after being fouled at the 0:55 mark as the Roadrunners led 56-47.
Colorado Mines was then able to hit a pair of free-throws at the 0:44 mark to cut the lead to 56-49 in favor of the Roadrunners. Wood answered for the Roadrunners as she made a pair of free-throws to increase the lead back to nine.
After Mines made a free throw, Wood was able to make two more free-throws to push the lead to 60-50 in favor of the Roadrunners with 0:36 left.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored the last point of the game when she made one of two free-throws to make the final score 61-50 at the 0:28 mark.
Overall for the game, Metro State shot 51 percent from the field. Metro State also held a 15-8 assist margin over Colorado Mines for the game.
Colorado Mines was led by Angie Charchalis with 12 points and 11 from Taylor Helbig.
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday night when they host Colorado Christian at 5 p.m.
