Women's basketball: MSU holds CSUP to 24 percent shooting in win

Box Score DENVER - Metro State overcame a slow start to defeat Colorado State-Pueblo 42-32 on Friday night.  The win increased the Roadrunners record to 18-8 overall and 16-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The loss dropped CSU-Pueblo to 17-8 overall and 14-7 in RMAC play. The win clinched a home game on Tuesday for MSU Denver in the quarterfinals of the RMAC Shootout.

The 32 points were the fewest points allowed in a game since Metro State won 50-30 over Lincoln (Pa.) in 2000, the fewest points the Roadrunners have allowed in school history.

Leading Metro State was Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) with 11 points and 13 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.  Also scoring in double figures was Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) with 11 points. 

The Roadrunners started the game off very slow as they started the game 0-for-12 from the floor.  During that stretch, CSU-Pueblo led 8-0.  Then Metro State answered with a 18-4 run to lead 18-12 with 3:05 left in half.  CSU-Pueblo, answered with a 5-0 run to close out the half.

At halftime, Metro State led 18-17.  Overall for the first half, the Roadrunners shot 7-for-28 which was 25 percent.  The Roadrunners held CSU-Pueblo to 24.1 percent.

Coming out for the second half, Metro State went on a 17-5 run to open the lead up to 35-23 at the 10:48 mark when CSU-Pueblo took a time-out.  Coming out of the time-out, CSU-Pueblo turned up the defensive pressure as it went on a 9-3 run to close the game to 38-32 in favor or Metro State with 4:52 left in the game.

After that point, Metro State scored the rest of the points as it closed on a 4-0 run to end the game at 42-32.  Overall for the game, Metro State shot 25 percent while holding CSU-Pueblo to 23.7 percent for the night. 

Leading the ThunderWolves was Laurel Kearsley with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Metro State will be back in action on Saturday night when it hosts UC-Colorado Springs at 5 p.m. for Senior Night.
