DENVER - Metro State defeated UC-Colorado Springs 65-47 on Saturday night to clinch at least a tie for second place. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 19-8 overall and 17-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Mountain Lions to 19-7 overall and 16-6 in RMAC play. Metro State clinched sole possession of second place in the RMAC with the win.
Metro State was led by 21 points and nine rebounds from
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.). Also scoring in double figures for the Roadrunners was
Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) with 10 points.
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) added nine points and
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had eight to go with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Roadrunners started the game off strong as they opened the game with a 21-4 run through the first 10 minutes. UCCS was able to battle back as the Roadrunners led 31-22 at halftime. Overall for the first half, the Roadrunners shot 40 percent on 12-for-30 shooting.
In the second half, Metro State was able to go on a 9-1 run at the 17:24 mark to pull ahead 42-26. UCCS answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 42-34 at the 12:11 mark. However, the Roadrunners were able to respond with a 19-9 run to close out the game at 65-47.
Overall for the game Metro State shot 41.9 percent from the field on 26-of-62 shooting including 4-for-14 from behind the arc. Metro State also shot 90 percent (9-for-10) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners outrebounded the Mountain Lions 42-29 for the game. The Roadrunners also forced 17 turnover from the Mountain Lions while only committing 10 of their own.
UCCS was led by Abby Kirchoff with 15 points.
Metro State will be back in action on Tuesday night when it hosts Colorado Mines in the first round of the RMAC Shootout at 5 p.m.
