Men's soccer: Roadrunners beat Regis 5-2 on the road

Box Score DENVER - Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) scored 34 seconds into the game to set the tone for a 5-2 win for Metro State at Regis in men's soccer on Sunday. Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) added two goals and an assist as the Roadrunners improved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis fell to 2-1-0 and 1-0-0.

The five goals were the most scored for the Roadrunners against Regis since 2005 and the most MSU Denver has ever scored on the road against Regis.

Hughes' goal was the second-fastest goal to start a game in school history, just missing Scott Grode's record of 29 seconds in 2009. Hughes scored on a breakaway after a long pass over the defenders from Lopez.

At 24:40, Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) scored on a one-touch shot off Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.)'s cross from the right corner. For Arrubla, who led the team in scoring last season, it was his first goal of the season.

The Rangers trimmed the lead in half with 39 seconds left in the first half on a goal from Andreas Bitter.

Lopez got things started on the right foot for the Roadrunners early in the second half. Hughes sent another crossing pass from the right corner and again it was a one-touch shot for the goal.

Regis was awarded a penalty kick at 64:22 and Martin Maybin converted, cutting Metro State's lead to 3-2.

Just four minutes later, Lopez found the net again to push it back to a two-goal margin. He headed in a long free kick from Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Clyde Glastetter (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) capped off the game with 36 seconds left. Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.)' breakaway was broken up by goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi, but Glastetter picked up the loose ball and fired into the net from the top of the box, beating two defenders that failed to clear the ball.

It was a physical game as 36 fouls were called and 11 cards were handed out, including a pair of red cards to Regis in the final three minutes of the game. Metro State was actually outshot in the game 18-11, but goalkeeper Keegan Hand (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley H.S.) made three saves to keep the Roadrunners in front.

Metro State will look to build a winning streak at Colorado Christian on Wednesday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
