DENVER - Metro State knocked off No. 17 Colorado Mines in four sets on Friday at home, winning 29-27, 20-25, 27-25, 25-23. The win improved the Roadrunners to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM fell to 7-4 and 2-1.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) led MSU Denver with 17 kills and hit .419 (17-4-31), adding seven total blocks. Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) pounded down 16 kills with a .333 (16-3-39) hitting percentage. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) added 13 kills and nine digs. Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) had the best night of her season so far with nine kills and a .471 (9-1-17) hitting percentage to go with seven blocks. She also had two service aces.
Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) split the first two sets with Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) at setter, but had 41 assists as the Roadrunners ran a 5-1 in the final two sets. Torr had 12 assists in the first two sets.
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) dug up 19 attacks defensively, while Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had nine in just two sets on the floor.
The Roadrunners trailed 10-7 early in the first set, but rallied for the tough win. Down 15-14, MSU Denver scored seven of the next nine points to take a 21-17 lead. The Orediggers then came back to tie the set 22-22 and the two squads battled back-and-forth until Quijano and Hoagland put down consecutive kills to end the set. Quijano had nine kills in the first set.
Metro State led 11-10 in the second set, but that was its final lead of the set. CSM ran off four straight points to break a 13-13 tie and went on to hit .278 in the frame.
The third set was the most balanced of the night. The Roadrunners had an early lead of 10-7, but after four straight for the Orediggers, it was back-and-forth. Neither team ran off more than two consecutive points until CSM scored three straight points to take a 22-21 lead. Two straight blocks won the set for MSU Denver.
The Roadrunners trailed 10-6 in the fourth, but rallied to take a 14-13 lead. Metro built its lead to 19-17, but the Orediggers scored four straight points to lead 21-19. A block by Hoagland and a kill from Heath tied the score at 22-22.
After the Orediggers went up 23-22, Heath ended the match with three straight points. She tied the set at 23-23 with a kill over the block. She and Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) combined for block to take the lead and she blasted match point off the block to end the night.
Metro State hit .280 and held CSM to just .200 in the match. The Roadrunners also had 15 blocks, their most since 2011.
The Roadrunners will host Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
