Volleyball: CCU rallies to edge Metro State in five

Box Score DENVER - Colorado Christian scored the last nine points to break a 6-6 tie in the fifth as the visiting Cougars upset Metro State 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-6 and hand MSU Denver its first conference loss of the season. The Roadrunners fell to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU improved to 5-7 and 1-3.

The loss overshadowed an impressive performance from Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.), who had a career-high 22 kills and hit .381 (22-6-42) in the match. She overcame a rough first set when she had three errors in nine attempts to hit .545 over the final four sets.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) added 13 kills and Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) had nine. Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) hit .556 with five kills in nine attempts.

Defensively, Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the team with 23 digs and Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had 13, while Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) and Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) each had 11.

Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) had 47 set assists as the team hit .138.

The Roadrunners hit .051 in the first set, while allowing CCU to hit .200.

MSU Denver rallied to win the next two sets as Quijano had 12 kills with just one error in 19 attempts.

With the fifth set tied 6-6, CCU ran off nine straight points to win the match. The Roadrunners handed the Cougars 11 of their 15 points with 10 hitting errors and one blocking error in the final frame.

Metro State will travel to No. 22 Regis for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday.
