Women's soccer: Rolph and Nelson score in second half to open season with win

CANYON, Texas - Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) scored on a penalty kick and Carly Nelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) found the net later as No. 10 Metro State scored twice in the second half to open the 2013 season with a win at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, on Thursday.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half with the Roadrunners outshooting the Lady Buffs 8-4.

Sophomore Shursteen Sharpe (Westminster, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) was fouled in the box at 62:20, leading to Rolph's penalty kick goal for the 1-0 lead.

Nelson scored 18 minutes later, firing a shot from inside the box after a pass from Rolph was deflected by a WTAMU defender.

MSU Denver outshot West Texas A&M 17-6 in the game, peppering 11 shots on goal. Rolph led the Roadrunners with four shot attempts and Becca Medina (Denver, Colo./Heritage H.S.) and Jordan Post (Spearfish, S.D./Spearfish H.S.) each had three.

Freshman Nicole Jablonski (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern H.S.) earned the shutout in her first collegiate appearance, making two saves.

The Roadrunners will battle No. 14 Dallas Baptist on Saturday in Canyon, Texas, in a battle of top-15 teams in NCAA Division II.
