Volleyball: Roadrunners win five-set thriller to open season

Box Score MONMOUTH, Ore. - Metro State survived for a five-set win over Cal State East Bay to open the season on Friday at the Western Oregon tournament, winning 22-25, 25-21, 25-22,18-25, 15-8.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) led the offense with 13 kills each, with Heath hitting .280 (13-6-25). Freshman Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) added nine kills in her first career match.

Running a 6-2 offense, freshman setter Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had a team-high 25 assists and added two aces and five digs. Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) contributed 15 assists and six digs.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 11 digs and Harris chipped in with 10. Heath blocked four attacks and freshman Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) had three block assists.

As a team, the Roadrunners hit .228 and held CSUEB to .216.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start in the first set, hitting .310. With MSU Denver leading 15-13, CSUEB ran off six straight points to pull ahead.

The Roadrunners surrendered four straight points to trail 20-19. A service error led to a five-point run for MSU Denver, capped by back-to-back block assists by Fiatoa and Heath. Fiatoa's kill ended the set.

CSUEB again had a late lead in the third, ahead 19-18. But the Roadrunners took five of the next six points for a 23-20 lead.

A rough finish cost Metro State the fourth set as the Pioneers scored nine of the final 11 points to break a 16-16 tie.

It was all Roadrunners in the fifth set. A run of four straight points gave them an 8-5 lead at the side switch, highlighted by a pair of kills by Haun. Leading 10-8, MSU Denver scored the final five points with Haun serving a pair of aces. She finished with a career-high six service aces, half of the team's 12.

Metro State will face host school Western Oregon at 7:30 p.m. (PT) tonight.
