Volleyball: Roadrunners survive another five-setter for second win on Friday

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Metro State won its second five-set match of the day on Friday, topping Western Oregon 25-22, 19-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-12 in Monmouth, Ore., at the Western Oregon tournament. The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 on the season, while WOU fell to 2-1. They defeated Cal State East Bay in five sets earlier in the day.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) again had a very strong offensive performance with 23 kills and hit .405 (23-6-42) to lead MSU Denver. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) chipped in with a career-high 17 kills and hit .325 (17-4-40), while freshman Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) tallied 13 kills. Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) put down nine kills.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 21 digs and Haun dug up 10 attacks for the double-double.

Continuing with a 6-2 offense, Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) led the setters with 28 assists and eight digs, while Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) assisted on 17 kills.

Metro State hit .271 in the match, helping overcome 22 service errors with just three aces. A strong defensive effort held the Wolves to a .229 hitting percentage.

The Roadrunners limited WOU to a .103 hitting percentage in the first set. Trailing 21-19, MSU Denver closed the set with six of the final seven points behind a pair of kills each by Harris and Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.).

Tied 17-17 in the second set, the Wolves scored eight of the final 10 points to split the match.

Metro State built a 15-9 lead in the third, but WOU rallied to tie the set at 16-16. The two teams traded side-outs for much of the rest of the set before Heath and Harris connected for consecutive kills to take the third set for a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was Metro State's worst offensively on the evening, hitting just .154.

But the Roadrunners rallied in the fifth for the second time on Friday, hitting .400. They jumped out to a strong start with an 8-6 lead at the side switch. After taking a 7-6 lead, they led the rest of the way. Back-to-back kills from Heath handed Metro State a 12-8 lead. Heath also connected for the final two points of the night for the Roadrunners to secure the victory.

MSU Denver will face No. 17 Western Washington and Holy Names (Calif.) on Saturday in the final day of the tournament.
