MONMOUTH, Ore. - Metro State split two matches on Saturday at the Western Oregon tournament, falling 25-16, 25-16, 25-11 to No. 17 Western Washington before rebounding with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 sweep over Holy Names (Calif.). MSU Denver concluded the weekend with a 3-1 record at the WOU tournament. WWU improved to 4-0, while HNU fell to 0-4.
In the first match against WWU, the Vikings were extremely efficient, committing just 11 total errors in the entire match, compared to 34 for the Roadrunners. WWU also hit .413 while holding Metro to just .121. Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 10 kills and Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 15 digs on defense.
MSU Denver regrouped before the Holy Names match and responded well. Heath pounded 15 more kills and hit .414 (15-3-29) to lead a strong offensive effort as the Roadrunners hit .327 in the match.
Setters Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) and Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) distributed the offense around well, as Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) also had 11 kills, Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had six and Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had five. Torr had a team-high 20 assists and Van Lith helped on 18 kills. Torr also had four service aces.
Defensively, Green again led the way with 16 digs and Haun had nine.
Metro State cleaned up its serving game with nine aces and just 10 errors.
MSU Denver will return to action at home on Friday at the Colorado Premier Challenge, facing No. 15 Angelo State (Texas) and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday.
