Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) poured in a career-high 20 points to lead Metro State to a 72-55 win over Colorado Christian University on Friday at Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cougars dropped to 5-7 and 3-5.
The Roadrunners trailed the Cougars for the first 10 minutes of the game, when
Kaysha Fox (Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson H.S.) hit a 3-pointer to tie things up at 11. The Roadrunners ended the first half up 39-23 going on a 31-13 run, and outrebounding the Cougars 24-16, with
Deni Jacobs (Plains, Kan./Southwestern Heights H.S.) leading the rebounding with eight.
Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) led Metro State with 10 points in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 from field goal range, and giving her a total of 13 for the game.
After Paine's game-high 20 points, the scoring was very balanced for the Roadrunners. Jensen finished with 13, followed by
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) and
Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) with nine and Jacobs and
Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) with eight. DeGarmo also had eight assists and three steals.
The Roadrunners shot 49.1 percent in the game, including 8-of-15 (.533) from the outside.
Kate Louthan had a team-high 15 points for the Cougars, 13 of them in the second half, while teammate Taylor Torres had 11 points for the game. Although CCU was the better team at the free-throw line in the second half, 73.3 percent to the Roadrunners 16.7 percent, it wasn't enough to pull out a win.
The Roadrunners will be at home Saturday against Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m.
