Women's basketball: Roadrunners rally for win over Western State

Box Score DENVER - Metro State overcame a six-point deficit at the halfway point of the second half to earn a 49-43 win over Western State on Saturday at home. The Roadrunners improved to 7-10 overall and 6-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSCU fell to 5-13 and 5-8 in the RMAC.

Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 13 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor. Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) had 12 points and shot 5-for-12, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Elena Velasquez (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) had seven points and nine rebounds in just 13 minutes off the bench.

Metro State shot just 32.1 percent in the first half and committed 10 turnovers, but stayed tied 23-23 at halftime thanks to a 21-to-15 rebounding margin.

The shots continued to bounce out early in the second half as the Mountaineers built a six-point lead with 13 minutes left.

Velasquez sparked a 17-2 run midway through the second half, hitting a free throw and then burying a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to cut the deficit to one point at 35-34 with 11:44 left. Lambrecht then forced a steal and found Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) for an easy layup as the Roadrunners went ahead 36-35 with 11:14 to go.

A 3-pointer by Kaysha Fox (Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson H.S.) with the shot clock expiring put Metro State ahead for good at 39-36 with nine minutes remaining. Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) capped the run with a jumper from the top of the key for a 47-37 lead with 3:44 left.

For the game, Metro State shot 33.3 percent, while allowing WSCU to connect at a 37.2 percent rate. But the Roadrunner outrebounded the Mountaineers 45-to-31 and forced 18 turnovers.

Metro State remains at home on Friday when it hosts Chadron State at 5 p.m.
