Box Score DENVER - Metro State suffered its third overtime loss of the season, falling 89-88 at home to Fort Lewis on Friday night. The Roadrunners dropped to 11-12 overall and 10-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FLC improved to 14-9 and 11-8.
Three players scored 20 or more points for Metro State for the first time since 1999.
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 22 points on 11-of-21 shooting and had 12 rebounds.
Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) and
Deni Jacobs (Plains, Kan./Southwestern Heights H.S.) each scored 20 points as well. Lambrecht hit 7-of-13 and had five assists and five rebounds, while Jacobs had 10 rebounds and was also 7-of-13 shooting.
Elena Velasquez (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) had seven assists and four points.
The Skyhawks led by as many as eight points in the first half and took a 41-37 lead into halftime after shooting 55.9 percent.
Metro State used a 9-2 run, making 4-of-5 from the floor, to take its first lead since 4-3, pulling ahead 55-54 with 14:49 remaining in regulation.
Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the half. Twice in the final 2:30, the Skyhawks hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, including Michelle Turner's shot that tied the game at 76-76 to send it to overtime with 23.8 seconds remaining.
The Skyhawks controlled the first half of overtime, but a layup by Nelson with 1:52 left after she grabbed her own rebound gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the period at 84-83.
After FLC answered, Lambrecht again drove for a layup for two more second-chance points for an 86-85 lead with 56.1 seconds to go.
Again, the Skyhawks scored quickly, but with the shot clock at two, Lambrecht calmly buried a 15-foot jumper from the right baseline to put Metro State in front 88-87 with 20.0 seconds remaining.
Fort Lewis went right back down the floor and scored with seven seconds left, as Ashley Kuchar hit another layup for an 89-88 lead. Nelson's fadeaway in the paint rimmed out as time expired on the Roadrunners.
Fort Lewis shot 52.8 percent for the game, including 5-of-8 (.625) in overtime. Christie Groh scored a career-high 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting to lead the Skyhawks. Erika Richards also had a career high with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including four 3-pointers.
Metro State will play its final home game this season on Saturday against Adams State at 5 p.m.
