Women's basketball: Defensive effort brings Metro State back to .500

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State overcame a second-half deficit with one of its best defensive performances of the season for a 46-44 win at Colorado Mines on Friday night. The Roadrunners improved to 10-10 overall and 9-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with their fourth straight victory, reaching .500 for the first time since starting the year 1-1. CSM fell to 7-13 and 6-10 in the RMAC.

MSU Denver held the Orediggers to just 31.5 percent shooting and outrebounded them 39-to-37. Metro State got a defensive stop on the final possession of the game to earn the victory.

Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) had an outstanding all-around game for the Roadrunners, scoring a team-high 10 points with five assists, five rebounds and three assists. Fawn Brady (Grand Junction, Colo./Grand Junction H.S.) was key on both ends of the floor as well with nine points and nine rebounds. Elena Velasquez (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia H.S.) added eight points and Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) and Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) each had six.

The Roadrunners dug themselves a hole early, trailing 9-2 over eight minutes into the game. But the offense got going late and outscored the Orediggers 21-8 over the next 9:30 to lead 23-17 and went into halftime up 23-19. Paine sparked the Roadrunners by connecting on a pair of 3-pointers to start the run.

Colorado Mines opened the second half on a 15-5 run to lead 34-28 with 10:29 left. Velasquez responded with back-to-back 3-pointers coming out of a timeout to tie the game. Another 3-pointer by DeGarmo put MSU Denver in front 37-34 with 5:50 remaining and the Roadrunners led the rest of the game.

The 12-0 run continued for the Roadrunners as Brady scored a 3-point play by making a layup and drawing a foul for a 40-34 lead with 5:07 to go.

A 3-pointer by CSM's Courtney Gallo cut Metro State's lead to 46-44 with 37 seconds left. DeGarmo's 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go rimmed out, but Nelson pulled down the rebound. However, she missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 8.5 seconds left.

After the Orediggers took a timeout with 3.7 seconds to go, a fadeaway jumper in the paint by Allie Grazulis missed off the back of the rim and Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) corralled the rebound to seal the win.

Grazulis led Colorado Mines with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Metro State will play at Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
