Volleyball: Quijano and Torr's career nights lead MSU Denver to 3-2 win

Box Score DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver held on for a 25-20, 26-24, 11-25, 24-26, 15-11 win over Florida Southern on Friday night at the Colorado Premier Challenge at the Auraria Event Center behind career nights from Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.). The Roadrunners improved to 5-1 this season, while FSC fell to 3-2.

Quijano matched a career high with 22 kills and hit .294, adding five blocks. Torr tied a career high with 62 assists, adding 13 digs and two kills. The two helped MSU Denver hit .261 in the match.

Newcomer Summer Greager (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian H.S.) enjoyed a breakout night with 14 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double as a Roadrunner. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) also had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs, playing the first three sets at outside hitter before moving to libero in the final two. Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had 16 digs to lead all Roadrunners.

Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) had 10 kills and hit .409, while Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) provided six kills and six blocks.

MSU Denver held the Moccasins under a .200 hitting percentage through two sets, while connecting at a .329 rate. The Roadrunners enjoyed a five-point run late in the first set and a run of seven out of nine points in the second to lead the match 2-0.

After stumbling in the third and fourth, MSU Denver recovered to hit .318 in the deciding set. Trailing 8-7, the Roadrunners rallied behind three kills from Quijano in the final eight MSU Denver points.

The Roadrunners will face No. 3 Minnesota Duluth at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and No. 5 Central Missouri at 7:30 p.m.
