Volleyball: Roadrunners win sixth straight, topping Fort Lewis

Box Score DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver earned a 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-10 win over Fort Lewis on Friday night for its sixth straight win, the longest winning streak for the Roadrunners since 2011. MSU Denver improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FLC dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the RMAC.
 
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) hit .484 and tied Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) for a match-high 16 kills. Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) and Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) each had seven kills and Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) added six.
 
The Roadrunners were strong at the net with 13.5 total blocks as a team. Hoagland led the way with five blocks and Fiatoa had four.
 
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) tied a career high with 22 digs and was 19-for-19 in serve-receive.
 
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 47 assists, helping MSU Denver hit .280 on the night.
 
The Roadrunners came out slow defensively in the first set, allowing the Skyhawks to hit .414, while committing seven errors in the service game to fall 25-22.
 
MSU Denver came out strong in the second, and this time rode its defense to the win to split the match at 1-1. The Roadrunners held FLC to just a .143 hitting percentage in the second. Leading 7-6, Haun served six straight points to build a 13-6 lead.
 
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the third, though FLC closed the gap to 16-14. MSU Denver responded with three straight points to get back in control.
 
Leading 12-9, Smith served nine straight points as MSU Denver pulled away to win the set and the match.
 
MSU Denver will host Western New Mexico at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
