Volleyball: Roadrunners finish strong in third straight win

Box Score SAN DIEGO - Metropolitan State University of Denver rallied after dropping the first set for the third straight match to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay 17-25, 25-22, 25-8, 25-10 on Saturday at the Seaside Invitational in San Diego. The Roadrunners improved to 3-0 on the season, while CSUMB fell to 0-3. It's the third time in the past six seasons MSU Denver has opened the season with three wins.

The eight points allowed in the third set are the second-fewest allowed in a set in the rally-scoring era (since 2001). The Roadrunners won the second set 30-5 in a sweep over Colorado Christian on Sept. 13, 2005, in the most lopsided set in school history.

A balanced attack led by Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) paced the offense. Quijano had a team-high 17 kills and hit .414, while Smith had a career-high 14 kills and hit .333. Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) added seven kills and hit .500 with no errors in 14 attempts.

Defensively, Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had a team-high 14 digs. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had 13 and Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 10. Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) led the Roadrunners with five blocks.

Torr assisted on 45 kills and had four of her own from the setter position, while helping MSU Denver hit .243.

The Roadrunners were strong at the service line, earning 10 aces led by Haun's four.

The team's defense tightened up over the final two sets, allowing a minus-.179 hitting percentage over that span. After committing 12 attack errors in the first set, the Roadrunners made just 12 combined in the final three sets to settle down and hit .333 after the first set.

MSU Denver will face Fresno Pacific later this afternoon.
