Box Score DENVER - Jack Mayfield (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) and
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) both scored in the final 15 minutes as Metropolitan State University of Denver rallied for a wild 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific on Sunday at The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver. It was MSU Denver's first game this season, while the Sharks were handed their first loss to drop to 2-1-1 on the year.
The Roadrunners had two great scoring chances in the first half as a shot by
Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hit the crossbar and one from
Makir Oropeza (Denver, Colo./C.E.C. Middle College) hit the post. But the score remained 0-0 through half, also thanks to a tremendous diving save by Roadrunners goalkeeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) on a free kick from 20 yards out.
HPU's Daniel Haehre started the scoring. A long, soft pass from Mario Garcia rolled through several MSU Denver defenders to Haehre in the center of the box, who converted the easy goal at 62:24.
Things were looking down for the Roadrunners until Arrubla centered a ball from the left corner to Mayfield, who scored on a one-touch shot from the goal box at 75:23, tying the game at 1-1.
It was Arrubla then scoring game-winner himself just three minutes later at 78:18.
Josh Belfrage (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) fired a long pass from midfield to a wide open Arrubla, who dribbled to the left side of the box and scored towards the far post.
The Roadrunners survived a late corner kick in the final 20 seconds to pull off the thrilling, come-from-behind win. They outshot the Sharks 16-14 in the game.
It was a very physical game with a total of 36 fouls called and six yellow cards.
MSU Denver returns to action on Saturday at St. Edward's in Austin, Texas. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m. CT.
