PUEBLO, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver's men's tennis team finished second and the women's team finished third at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships on Saturday in Pueblo, Colorado. The men defeated No. 42 Colorado Mesa 5-2 in the semifinals before falling 5-2 to No. 33 Western New Mexico in the title match. The women won 5-2 over CSU-Pueblo.
Haleigh Chobanian (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette H.S.) and
Kasey Love (Daytona Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek H.S.) won 8-2 over CSU-Pueblo at No. 1 doubles and
Courtney Wright (Houston, Texas/Memorial H.S.) and
Ana-Jelena Vujosevic (Milano, Italy/Skednja Ekonomska Skola) won 8-3 at No. 2. Wright and Love both won three-set matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and Chobanian earned a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win at No. 3 to clinch the match.
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) and
Nick Baker (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West H.S.) won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and
John Qualls (Henderson, Nev./Foothill H.S.) earned an 8-6 decision at No. 2 against CMU. Qualls and
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) both won their singles matches in straight sets and Baker won 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2 to clinch the match.
Against the Mustangs, Graetz and Baker handed WNMU's No. 1 doubles team its first loss to a conference opponent this season, 9-8 (10-8) at the No. 1 position.
Graetz breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles for the remaining win for MSU Denver.
The men's team finished the year with a 14-10 record, while the women finished 7-16.
