Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's tennis team had four indivuals compete in the first rounds of the 2016 ITA Regionals hosted by Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas on Friday, September 23.
Sophomore
Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) and Senior
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) both won their two matches to open up play in day one. Tscherne defeated his first opponent of the day from Saint Edwards (7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-1) and later would easily knock off an Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe from CSU-Pueblo (6-3, 6-1) in straight sets.
Graetz cruised to victory in his first match against Ivkovic of Saint Edwards (6-1,6-2) and won his second match of the day against Gonzalez from Saint Mary's in three sets (6-7 (5),6-1,6-3).
Junior transfer Tom Witteveen (San Diego/Steele Canyon High School) and freshman Alejandro Martinez-Morilla (Madrid, Spain/I.E. Valdecas) both split their matches in the first day of competition in Texas. Witteveen won his first match and fell in his second, while Martinez-Morilla fell in his first but bounced back for a win in his second.
The Roadrunners continue play on Saturday, September 23 at the ITA Regionals. The Day two draws and the full brackets can be found in the links above.
