AFA Sunday Draws
The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's tennis team had multiple members participating at both the ITA Regionals in Wichita Falls, Texas and Air Force Invite in Colorado Springs.
The Roadrunners were represented by sophomore
Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) and senior
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School), who both went undefeated in day one of the ITA Regionals, both were elimnated from the tournament on Saturday. Tscherne continued his excellent play from Friday with a win in the third round (7-5,5-7,7-6(10)). Tscherne went down to the wire in his final match of the tournament against an opponent from Western New Mexico but fell short (7-6,6-1). Graetz fell against the number one see in the tournament from host Midwestern State (6-7 (5),6-1,6-3) in the third round matchup.
Graetz and Tscherne had also made it into the third round of the doubles tournament but fell short 8-6 to Western New Mexico.
"Joey had a nailbitier finish in his first match today, which lasted four hours" said head coach
Daniel Hangstefer. "Overall, I felt the men a solid tournament and we will continue to improve each day in practice."
MSU Denver also had players in action in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Invite both in singles and doubles.
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) lead the way winning both of his matches on Saturday. Sophomore
Keenan Kaltenbacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) split his two matches on day one against two opponents from Air Force. Both
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and
Adam Rivera (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) dropped their opening singles matches Sunday.
Hayes and Stember fell in their doubles match but Kaltenbachen and Rivera were able to advance to the second round before being defeated.
The Roadrunners will continue play on Sunday in Colorado Springs.
