Dallas, Texas- The University of Denver men's and women's tennis team competed at Dallas Baptist on Thursday, March 23. The men swept the Patriots 9-0 while the women's team fell 8-1 to the Patriots.
In the men's doubles competition senior
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) and sophomore
Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) took No. 1 doubles 8-3. Senior
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) and sophomore
Keenan Kaltenbacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) won their match 8-2. Junior
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and freshman
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla (Madrid, Spain/I.E. Valdecas) took their match 8-3.
The Roadrunners swept all six singles matches as well with Graetz winning No. 1 sinlges in two sets 6-1, 6-2. Tscherne won his match 6-2, 6-2. Martinez- Morilla was about to win his battle in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-7(5), 10-3. Stember defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-3. Kaltenbacher won his match in two sets as well 6-3, 6-3 with Hayes completing the sweep at 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles competition on the women's side, the Roadrunners were swept by the Patriots. Juniors
Courtney Wright (Houston, Texas/Memorial H.S.) and
Emily Kerr (Winchester, England/Peter Symonds College) fell 8-3. Freshmen
Tabitha Porter (Norwich, England/Northcote College) and
Valerie Valencia (Playas de Tijuana, Mexico/Bonita VIsta High School) fell in No. 2 doubles doubles 8-3 with junior
Linying Xiao (Guilin, China/St. Mary's Academy (Colo.)) and freshman Mackenzie Horton falling 8-4 as well.
In singles the Roadrunners fell in five of the six matches. Valencia fell in No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3. Porter got the lone with for the Roadrunners in two sets 7-5, 6-3. Wright was defeated in tight battle 3-6, 6-4, (10-7). Kerr fell in two sets 6-3, 6-1. Xiao fell in a close battle as well 6-3, 7-6, (7-4). Freshman Ainsley Winterrown fell in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Both the men's and women's team will take on St. Edwards University Friday, March 24 in Dallas, Texas.
