Baseball: Roadrunners Fall 5-4 to Grizzlies

Series continues tomorrow with double header

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team fell 5-4 to Adams State on Friday, March 24. The Roadrunners are now 10-13 overall and 6-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Grizzlies improved to 9-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
 
Junior Beecher Strube (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School ) started on the mound for the Roadrunners on Friday evening. Strube held Adams State scoreless through the first inning of the game, with the Grizzlies making it on the board in the top of the second scoring two runs on a Roadrunners error.
 
Both teams were held scoreless in the third inning with both teams scoring a run in the fourth inning. Junior Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) scored his 10th home run of the season to put the Roadrunners on the board in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Grizzlies lead to 3-1.
 
After holding the Grizzlies scoreless through the fifth inning, the Roadrunners were able to score in the fifth inning after Freshman Dylan Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./D'Evelyn Jr/Sr High School) kicked off the inning, hitting a double down the right field line. Junior Donny Ortiz Jr. then reached base on a walk. Senior Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) advanced the runners on a sac bunt, with Nelson following scoring the second run of the game for the Roadrunners on a wild pitch.
 
The sixth inning belonged to thee Roadrunners as they tied the game up at three. Junior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hit a single to left field to score senior Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.).
 
The Grizzlies fought back in the seventh inning scoring two runs with two outs to steal the lead at 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
 
With no score in the eighth inning for both teams, the Roadrunners fought back in the ninth. With two runners on base for MSU Denver, Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to score Kennedy, making the score 5-4. However, that would be the last run for the Roadrunner with the Grizzlies taking the first game of the series.
 
The Roadrunners and Grizzlies will continue play with a double header Saturday, March 25. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex.
