Tennis: Roadrunners Split With Mustangs

Women Earn 5-0 Victory; Men Fall 5-0

Dallas – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's and women's tennis teams competed against Western New Mexico on Saturday with the women winning 5-0 and the men falling 5-0.

The women's match began with all three doubles pairs coming away victorious.  The No. 2 doubles pair of freshman Tabitha Porter (Norwich, England/Northcote College) and junior Linying Xiao (Guilin, China/St. Mary's Academy (Colo.)) won 8-1.  Both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams won their matches 8-5.

Freshman Valerie Valencia (Playas de Tijuana, Mexico/Bonita VIsta High School) won the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and Porter won at the No. 2 singles position 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the victory for MSU Denver.  Junior Emily Kerr (Winchester, England/Peter Symonds College) at No. 3 singles, Xiao at No. 4 singles, freshman Ainsley Winterrowd (Lacey, Washington/North Thurston High School) at No. 5 singles, and freshman Mackenzie Hotan (Beaverton, Oregon/Southridge High School) at No. 6 singles, were all leading their matches when the Roadrunners secured the 5-0 victory.

On the men's side, MSU Denver was unable to take a match from the Mustangs during doubles play.  The No. 1 doubles pair of senior Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) and sophomore Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) fell 8-4 while the No. 2 & No. 3 doubles partners each fell 8-3.

In singles play for the men, freshman Alejandro Martinez-Morilla (Madrid, Spain/I.E. Valdecas) was defeated 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 position and junior Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) fell 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 position to clinch the match for the Mustangs.  Graetz was leading his match at No. 1 singles and Tscherne was leading at No. 2 singles while Senior Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) was in a third set at No. 4 singles and sophomore Keenan Kaltenbacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) trailed in the second set at No. 5 singles.

The men's team will face St. Mary's in Pueblo, Colo. on Friday, March 31 at 2 p.m. while the women's team will not play again until Saturday, April 8 against Colorado Mesa at 9:30 a.m. at The Regency Athletic Complex.
