@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners Seek Redemption at Dixie State

The RMAC tournament game carries regional implications

DENVER – Pick one weekend that stands out as a source of frustration for the MSU Denver women's soccer team, and it's likely the late September sojourn to Utah.

Pick one game in particular, and it might be the opener of that adventure, a Sept. 28 loss of 1-0 at Dixie State.

In the end, that one game, that one goal, is the difference for home field advantage in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.

Instead of playing Dixie State at the Regency Athletic Complex, Metropolitan State University of Denver makes a 630-mile trip to St. George, Utah, for Tuesday's 7 p.m. quarterfinal.

"You can always look back and wonder what if," MSU Denver coach Tracy Chao said. "But we're excited to get back there and try to get some redemption."

Both teams finished 8-5 and tied for fourth in the RMAC, with Dixie State's head-to-head victory serving as the tiebreaker.

Victoria Bravo scored the game-winner on a header in the 38th minute, and the Trailblazers held on while holding the advantage in shots (9-8), shots on goal (5-1) and – in a no-no for MSU Denver – corner kicks (5-3). The game-winner came off a corner kick.

There were also 30 fouls called in a rough-and-tumble match.

MSU Denver dropped a 3-1 decision to Westminster to conclude that road trip.

The Roadrunners' league losses have come to the top four seeds (Colorado School of Mines is first, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is second and Westminster third) as well as to sixth-seeded Regis in overtime.

Other than Colorado School of Mines' 11-game win streak, Dixie State is the second-hottest team in the league with six straight wins.

The matchup with Dixie State also carries huge postseason implications, as Dixie State was No. 7 and MSU Denver was No. 8 in the South Central Regional rankings released last week. Six teams will advance to the regional, including the tournament champions from the RMAC, the Lone Star Conference and the Heartland Conference.

Colorado School of Mines finished 13-0 in RMAC play to earn the top seed and will play host to No. 8 seed Colorado Christian at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Other first-round matchups Tuesday include UCCS playing host to Colorado State University-Pueblo at 5 p.m., and Westminster playing host to Regis at 3:30 p.m.

The semifinals and finals are Friday and Sunday, with highest remaining seed hosting.
