DENVER – The MSU Denver women's basketball team has had two weeks to think about a three-game losing streak.
Now that the Christmas break is ending, the Roadrunners finally get a chance to do something about it in Sunday's 3 p.m. MST nonconference game at Northern State (S.D.).
"We're looking forward to getting back on the court after the break against a tough Northern team on its home floor," MSU Denver coach
Tanya Haave said.
Metropolitan State University of Denver dropped to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Dec. 16 with a frustrating 66-46 home loss to Western State Colorado. But the two other losses in the Roadrunners' three-game skid were by five points or fewer. In fact, MSU Denver has lost four games by five or less this season.
Meanwhile Northern State is 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Wolves and Roadrunners have one common opponent: Minnesota State-Moorhead. MSU Denver lost to Minnesota State-Moorhead 62-41 on Nov. 23, while Northern State has lost to the same opponent twice: 47-39 at home on Dec. 1 and 60-51 on the road on Dec. 19.
That was the most recent game for Northern State before it, too, took a holiday break. The Wolves have lost two straight and three of their last four.
The Wolves are led by Briana Kusler, a 5-foot-9 junior who averages 13.1 points and 9.3 rebounds. Kusler has played in only eight games this season and has had double-doubles in four of them, including the past two games. In the Dec. 19 loss to Minnesota State-Moorhead, Kusler had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Lexi Wadsworth, a 5-11 freshman, adds 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds.
Northern State is holding opponents to 39.5 percent field goal shooting, which contributes to a strong rebound margin of +7.9 per game.
