DENVER - After a rocky start to the afternoon, junior slugger
Cade Peters (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) and senior pitcher
Taylor Petersen (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) helped the MSU Denver baseball team take game two of a doubleheader on Saturday against Colorado State University-Pueblo.
After falling 7-2 in the opener, the Roadrunners took the nightcap 6-2.
Peters, yet another stellar transfer that Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Ryan Strain brought in, hit two home runs in game two, the first of which was a three-run, first-inning blast to put the Roadrunners up 3-0. His second homer came in the fourth inning, a solo shot, giving MSU Denver a 4-2 lead.
Â
"I took note on how they were pitching me the first two games," Peters said. "I knew he was coming with a changeup my first at-bat and once I hit that out, I knew he was coming with a fastball my next at-bat. I was gambling on it."
Â
Petersen was electric in his 3 â…“ innings in game two. Petersen entered the game in the fourth inning for senior
Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park). Petersen struck out seven of the 13 ThunderWolves hitters he faced while only giving up one hit.
Â
"I felt good, everything felt normal," Petersen said. "I just finally figured out how to throw strikes and Matt (Malkin) helped me out a a lot behind the plate, made it easier for me to keep it simple."
Â
Senior
Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Neb./Millard West), who entered the game in the first inning, added two RBIs on a laser home run over the left field fence in the fourth to seal the game.
Â
"Fortunately we had a couple of guys that stepped up in the second game today,"Â Strain said. "When (Cade) Peters hit the home runs, that three-run homer really kind of opened it up."
Â
Game one was a bit of a different story for the Roadrunners. CSU-Pueblo got to sophomore
Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch) in the first inning and was able to score five runs. Soole finished the day going five innings, giving up seven runs, through just three were earned, with eight punchouts. CSU-Pueblo starter Josh Dahl gave the Roadrunners fits all day and pitched a complete game.
Â
A Malkin home run, his sixth of the season, put MSU Denver on the board in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead to just three runs, but that would be all for the Roadrunners. The ThunderWolves added two more in the fourth, for the game's final runs.
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.
Â
"We've got to continue to grind out at-bats," Strain said. "We haven't played that well this weekend, but we were able to grind out a win and we need to come out here tomorrow and even this thing up."
