Men take aim at regional berth, women seeking regular-season and tournament titles

DENVER – MSU Denver's men's and women's tennis seasons will reach their peaks this week.

On Tuesday, the Roadrunners will wrap up the regular season with a dual at Colorado State University-Pueblo, with each matchup beginning at 2 p.m.

At stake is the RMAC regular-season championship for the MSU Denver women, and while the RMAC doesn't sponsor men's tennis as a championship sport, a potential berth in the NCAA Division II regionals is at stake.

Beyond Tuesday, the women will compete in the RMAC tournament Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Roadrunners' men are ranked fifth in the South Central Region, though only four teams will advance to postseason play. Metropolitan State University of Denver is one spot behind regional No. 4 Texas-Permian Basin, which doesn't compete again until the Lone Star Conference tournament in two weeks.

Both MSU Denver and Texas-Permian Basin have defeated CSU-Pueblo 4-3 this season.

The Roadrunners lost the doubles point in the April 3 meeting, but won the top four singles matches for the victory.

"It's a slim margin, so we just need to control what we can control right now and hope a couple of things go our way," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said.

The MSU Denver women, meanwhile, cruised to a 7-0 win in the first matchup with CSU-Pueblo. The Roadrunners are 3-0 in RMAC play and a win would make them the top seed for the RMAC tournament and set up a rematch with the ThunderWolves.

The RMAC semifinals are Friday, with the championship scheduled for Saturday.

"We're focusing on this match and not the conference tournament," Graetz said. "We don't want to look too far ahead. They girls are excited to play – we haven't played in quite a few days. We're excited to get back on the court and play Pueblo. We know how they play since we just played them a few weeks ago. We just have to make sure we bring the right focus and intensity and hopefully that's enough."
