DENVER – Yes, it's the MSU Denver Invitational.
But in Sunday's second day of the two-day event, it's going to seem like the MSU Denver Intrasquad Meet.
The four semifinalists in the Men's Singles A Draw are all Roadrunners. And so are three of the four semifinalists in the Women's Singles A Draw. And two of the four semifinalists in the Men's Singles B Draw. And all four of the semifinalists in the Women's Singles B Draw.
Talk about a good day.
In the four-team season-opening tournament at the Regency Athletic Complex that also includes Colorado Mesa, Colorado State University-Pueblo and Colorado College, MSU Denver went 24-3 against outside competition.
"It was a really good day," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "And I think the most pleasing part of it is that we had some really close matches but we came out on top in all of them. That shows a lot this early in the season. Everyone is pretty happy."
When the tournament resumes at 8 a.m. Sunday, MSU Denver's top two men's singles players –
Daniel Llorente and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla, are paired up in one A Draw semifinal. The winner faces the winner of another All-Roadrunners semifinal between
David Kijak and
Mateo Besada.
All four had to go to a third set (a 10-point super set) to advance with a second win on Saturday. Kijak's second-round win came over teammate
Joshua King.
The MSU Denver women advanced to the A Draw semifinals a little more easily, with the most notable victory by Roadrunners freshman
Brooklyn Ross over All-RMAC performer Kristen Kirby of Colorado Mesa 6-1, 6-4.
Tabitha Porter faces teammate Gala Costello in one semifinal, while Ross faces Mesa's Maike Waldburger, a surprise 6-4, 6-1 winner over MSU Denver's
Helena Steenberg 6-4, 6-1
"Brooklyn had a really good win today over Kristen, who is a very good player," Graetz said. "Brooklyn played really tough and that was awesome to see."
In Men's B Singles,
Jordi Ribera and
Billy McDermott each won twice to advance to the semifinals and are aiming to face one another in the final. The All-MSU Denver Women's B Draw pits
Sara Iverson and
Ainsley Winterrowd in one semifinal and
Kayla Myburgh and
Mackenzie Hotan in the other.
Graetz said the Roadrunners' first-day showing was equal parts expected and surprising.
"I wanted them to expect it," he said. "I gave them the seed in their mind that they should expect to come out and compete at a really high level and expect this. To have this many people left in the main draw probably isn't expected, but I'm excited about it."
Graetz also noted the strong play of his freshmen players, who were a combined 9-1 (5-1 men, 4-0 women), with the only loss King's setback against teammate Llorente.
"We had a lot of players who played their first-ever college match," Graetz said. "And the way they played, it didn't seem like that, which was great to see. Everyone came out with the right mentality and played their game."
Meanwhile in doubles, King and Besada have advanced to the men's semifinals, while the Roadrunners have two semifinalist on the women's side – the combination of Steenberg and Castello and the pairing of Ross and Hotan.
So now its MSU Denver vs. MSU Denver so many times.
"(Sunday) is a good opportunity to go out and compete against a teammate and battle," Graetz said. "You're not trying to be friends out there. It's exciting that you get to play against your own teammates because it means you've advanced far in the tournament."
