DENVER – So we're saying there's a chance.
MSU Denver enters the final game of the women's basketball regular season needing to earn a road win in Friday's 5:30 p.m. game at Chadron State and needing some help in the form of an upset by Adams State at Fort Lewis.
So, yes, it's possible to earn the eighth and final spot for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
"We're not eliminated, but we need to take care of our business, and it won't be easy because Chadron is not an easy place to play," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "Their record is deceptive. That's a good team, with players who can score, playing with nothing to lose, and on Senior Night.
MSU Denver (12-15 overall) is tied with Fort Lewis for eighth place in the RMAC at 11-10, but Fort Lewis holds the tiebreaker advantage because of its 63-61 home win over the Roadrunners on Jan. 3, a game that MSU Denver led by as many as 14 points. MSU Denver is one game behind 12-9 Dixie State in the standings, but Dixie State also holds the tiebreaker edge because of a head-to-head win.
Fort Lewis is on a downward trend with six straight losses, but three of the last four have come on the road to the top three teams in the league by an average of 4.3 points. Adams State is 3-24 overall and 3-18 in the RMAC and has lost eight straight.
The Roadrunners were still in control of their own destiny before losing on a tip-in with two seconds left against CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, ruining Senior Night.
"They were down for a while, clearly disappointed," Haave said of her players. "But they're resilient and they've bounced back. I trust that this team will be ready."
Sophomores
Jaiden Galloway and
Morgan Lewis turned in strong showings in each game last weekend.
Galloway, who matched a career high with 10 assists on Friday against New Mexico Highlands and tied a career high with 14 points Saturday, averaged 12.0 points, 9.0 assists and 3.0 steals. Lewis scored 15 points each night, averaged 7.5 rebounds and shot 66.7 percent from the field (12 of 18) and 60 percent from 3-point range (6 of 10).
"Jaiden and Morgan have been showing some consistency," Haave said. "And that's good for now and for the future, too."
Chadron State is 7-23 overall and is 14
th in the RMAC at 5-16. But the Eagles won two straight games on their home floor last weekend.
MSU Denver beat Chadron State 76-67 at the Auraria Event Center on Dec. 21, one of two games this season in which the Roadrunners had five players score in double figures.
The well-balanced MSU Denver team has seven players averaging between 10.0 points (senior
Bree Wellington) and 6.7 points (senior
Leya Harvey) per game. In between are Lewis (8.4), junior
Mariah Schroeder (8.2), Galloway (8.1), sophomore
Jaela Richardson (7.5) and junior
Maggie Justinak (7.1).
"We want to end on a good note no matter what happens," Haave said. "If this is our last game, it would be nice to have a win."
