DENVER – It was three years ago today, April 23, 2017, that MSU Denver's men's and women's teams swept the RMAC Tournament championships in tennis, with both defeating Colorado Mesa.
Calum Hayes earned a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles in the deciding match to lift MSU Denver to a 5-4 victory on the men's side. The Roadrunners had dropped two of three doubles matches before rallying to win four of six in singles.
The women similarly lost two of three in doubles before rallying.
Tabitha Porter teamed with Valerie Valencia to win at No. 2 doubles and then won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to lead the way in the 5-3 win.
Those performances highlight our latest installment of "On This Date in Roadrunners History," which looks back at the biggest accomplishments in MSU Denver athletics on that particular calendar day.

2019 – Matt Malkin was 2-for-4 and hit his 21
st homer of the season,
Chase Anderson was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and
Cade Crader struck out six of the 10 batters he faced in three innings of no-hit relief as MSU Denver crushed Division I Northern Colorado 15-2 in baseball.

Jennifer Hankins shot a 5-over-par 77, giving her three-day, 54-hole score of 9-over 225 to finish in a sixth-place tie at the RMAC Championships for women's golf.
2019 – The MSU Denver women's tennis team wrapped up its third straight RMAC regular-season championship with a 5-2 victory over CSU-Pueblo.
Mackenzie Hotan didn't lose a game all day, winning 6-0 at No. 2 doubles and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
2019 – Joey Tscherne extended his winning streak to eight at No. 1 singles as the MSU Denver men's tennis team ended its season on a five-match winning streak by defeating CSU-Pueblo 5-2.
2018 – Sarena Espinoza was 4-for-6 with a homer and six RBIs as MSU Denver swept a softball doubleheader from Colorado School of Mines, 8-5 and 4-3.
2018 – Sean Kennedy delivered a walk-off RBI single to give MSU Denver a 5-4 victory over UCCS and a split of a baseball doubleheader.
2018 – MSU Denver's Meg McMullen shot an even-par 72 to jump from 23
rd place to eighth at 8-over 152 after the second day of the RMAC Championships for women's golf.
2017 – Trent Maloney's three-run homer capped a four-run top of the ninth inning, and MSU Denver held on for a 6-3 baseball victory over UCCS.
2016 – One day after snapping Colorado Mesa's 29-game softball winning streak with a 2-1 victory, MSU Denver did the same thing by the same score in an eight-inning contest. Cassidy Smith scattered five hits while allowing only an unearned run, and Hayley Fields' RBI triple in the top of the eighth drove in the winning run. The Roadrunners then beat Black Hills State 9-0 on Kailey Christensen's five-hit shutout.
2016 – Sara Hughes won the women's triple jump with an NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships provisional qualifying mark of 39 feet, 2 ¼ inches at the Colorado School of Mines Invitational.
2011 – Jennessa Tessone went 4-for-6 with a homer and two RBIs as MSU Denver swept a doubleheader from Regis, 4-3 and 9-2.
2011 – David Fox matched a school record with three doubles and Zach Krueger homered as MSU Denver earned a 7-4 baseball victory over Colorado Mesa.
2011 – Vail Davis set the school record in the women's long jump with an effort of 5.01 meters (16 feet, 5 ¼ inches) at the Jack Christiansen Invite Davis had set the record of 4.77 meters (15-7 ¾) on March 23. Meanwhile, Derek Fiorini won the men's 400 meters, topping a field of 22 with his time of 48.02 seconds.
2005 – Clint Cleland was 4-for-8 with a homer and seven RBIs as MSU Denver swept Colorado School of Mines in a baseball doubleheader, 9-2 and 11-3.
2004 – Rebecca "Beck" Meares (No. 1 doubles, No. 1 singles) and Mercedes Pollmeier (No. 2 doubles, No. 3 singles) both completed two wins, and cruised to quick singles victories to clinch MSU Denver's 5-0 victory over UCCS in RMAC Tournament for women's tennis.
2004 – Sergio Moreno got the final two outs, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs, as MSU Denver knocked off 21
st-ranked Fort Hays State (Kan.) oin baseball.
2001 – Jarrad Rexilius wrapped up a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to clinch MSU Denver's victory in the RMAC Tournament championship for men's tennis, a 5-0 victory over CSU-Pueblo that earned the Roadrunners a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
2001 – For the second year in on row on April 23, Jerod Stultz homered in both games of an April 23 doubleheader, part of a 4-for-8 day that included three RBIs, in a doubleheader sweep of Regis, 8-0 and 10-4. Steven Fox pitched a five-hit shutout in the seven-inning opener.
2000 – Jerod Stultz went 4-for-7 overall and had a homer and three RBIs in each game as MSU Denver swept a baseball doubleheader from Colorado Mesa, 11-3 and 12-3.
1994 – The MSU Denver men's tennis team completed its season at 15-1 overall and 7-1 in the Colorado Athletic Conference with wins of 9-0 over UCCS and 8-1 over Colorado Mesa. All of the Roadrunners' wins came in straight sets. Jake Keller, at No. 2 singles, dropped only four games while winning twice.
1993 – Arturo Rodriguez picked up victories in No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles as MSU Denver wrapped up the men's tennis regular season with a 6-3 victory over Denver.
1992 – Andy Dewett homered in each game while going a combined 5-for-8 with eight RBIs as MSU Denver swept Colorado School of Mines 10-2 and 16-6 in a baseball doubleheader.
1991 – Rob Barringer was 6-for-7 with four RBIs as MSU Denver split a baseball doubleheader with Southern Utah, bouncing back from a 10-5 defeat to win 12-2 in the nightcap.
1991 – Alicia Hayden (No. 1) and Sandi Gwynn (No. 2) both won three-set singles matches to propel the MSU Denver women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over CSU-Pueblo.
1990 – Nancy Kogle was 3-for-7 with a homer, nine RBIs and three stolen bases as MSU Denver swept host Regis 14-4 and 11-3 in a softball doubleheader that saw both games end after six innings due to the mercy rule.
1990 – The MSU Denver men's tennis team wrapped up its season with an 8-1 win over UCCS. Toby Ortegon (No. 1) and Mike Hanson (No. 2) cruised to singles wins and also combined for a three-set win at No. 1 doubles.
