DENVER – Normally, the track & field season would be nearing its stirring conclusion, with the RMAC Championships having just been held and last-chance meets for qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships just ahead.
So we're going to have a meet of our own.
Starting today, for the next 10 weekdays, we'll be holding a virtual track meet with MSU Denver's best-ever performers in every event that is contested at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. We're calling it the MSU Denver All-Time Track Meet.
We've pored through the record books – and trust us, the pre-1987 era is quite sketchy and incomplete – to find the top eight performers in every event in MSU Denver history.
We'll score the meet (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) with each year representing a team. Each individual gets only his or her best-ever time or performance, so no one is in the top eight more than once in any individual event. Relays are ranked by the best time for each year, so it is possible for an individual to be in the top eight in more than one relay.
Field events are a bit of a wild card at MSU Denver, particularly in anything other than the long jump or triple jump. So, the handful of times that the Roadrunners have had a participant in a field event, those can be big in our virtual meet, regardless of the quality of that performance.
We'll total up the points and use the totals to determine our best team ever in both men's and women's track & field, as well as the best combined team in program history.
We hope you'll enjoy our trip back in time to put our best performers' work in historical perspective. And please, if you know the first names of our some our best-ever performers from the 1969 through 1984 era, let us know!
We'll start today with the 10,000 meters and the long jump for both men and women.
The schedule of events is listed below the results and updated team scores.
After two events, the 2014 men and the 2012 women are leading their respective team races, while the 2014 team is leading the combined race. The 2014 men have 24 points, outdistancing the second-place 2017 team by 14 points, while the 2012 women have doubled the second-place 2016 team, 22-11, through two events. In the combined race, the 2014 team has 34 points, while the second-place 2016 team has the 22 points earned by the women.
Nick Kadlec posted the best 10,000 meters time in the history of the men's program on April 17, 2014, when he ran a provisional qualifying time for nationals at the Mount SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Kadlec's time of 30:05.65 placed him ninth out of 41 runners in the race, and second among NCAA Division II runners. His time broke John Liese's record of 30:11.16 set in 1983.
Kylee Schuler ran the best time in women's program history in the 10,000 on April 19, 2012, also at the Mount SAC Relays, where she finished seventh in a field of 27 with a provisional qualifying time of 35:45.04.
The 2014 team gets its second win, this time on the women's side, due to Belle Kiper's school-record long jump effort of 5.71 meters (18 feet, 8 ¾ inches) on May 5, 2014. That mark was good for seventh place at the RMAC Championships.
On the men's side, Robert Carlson won the RMAC Championships on May 7, 2017, with his school-record performance of 7.32 meters (24- ¼) which was a provisional qualifier for nationals.
