FRESNO, Calif. – MSU Denver had three doubles teams reach the quarterfinals and has two men's players still competing in the main draw after two rounds of singles at the ITA West Regional Championships.
Roadrunners men
Carlos Pinedo and
Jeanloup Auzias both had first-round byes and won second round matches on Thursday and both also advanced in doubles – though each has a different Roadrunners partner.
For the women, the doubles tandem of
Ava Neuburger-Higby and
Isabel Heras, seeded fifth, won twice to advance to the quarterfinals.
"We still have some people in the hunt, and that's great," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said.
Pinedo, seeded eighth in men's singles, had a first-round bye and then defeated Younes Kodiji of Concordia-Irvine (Calif.) 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16. Auzias, seeded 11
th, also had a first-round bye before winning his second round match against James Caddies of Concordia-Irvine 6-2, 6-4.
Pinedo teamed with
Andy Caruana to defeat opponents from Fresno Pacific (Calif.) 8-2 in the first round and foes from Point Loma (Calif.) 8-2 to reach the quarterfinals. Auzias and
Billy McDermott, seeded eighth, had a first-round bye before being a Fresno Pacific team 8-4 to earn their trip to the quarters.
In other men's results
David Kijak picked up a first round win before falling to sixth-seeded Ivan Hornung of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) and the 16
th-seeded McDermott defeated Jasdeep Pintal of Point Loma in a super-set before being knocked off by Adam Large of Concordia-Irvine. Caruana dropped his first match but will play in the consolation bracket Friday.
For the women, both
Lilly Stienemeier and
Marie Cool earned first-round wins before falling to seeded opponents in the second round – Stienemeier was beaten by No. 1 seed Colbeyshae Emery of Biola (Calif.) and Cool by 14
th-seeded Maria Borodi of Fresno Pacific.
Heras lost two heartbreakers in super sets, while Neuburger-Higby bounced back after a first-round loss to No. 5 seed Thelma Sepulveda of Point Loma to win and advance in the consolation bracket.
Cool and Stienemeier won the first-round doubles match before falling in the second round.
"We had some good results and some tough losses," Graetz said. "But overall it was a good day. The players got a lot of tennis in."
