@MSUDenverWGOLF: Shaw, Roadrunners Tied for 2nd After 1st Day of Tournament

Shaw scores personal-best 72, Blanco and Carpenter just off the pace with 74s

PUEBLO, Colo. – Led by Winnie Shaw's career-best round of even-par 72, the MSU Denver women's golf team turned in the fourth-best round in program history and is tied for second place with a team score of 14-over 302 after the first day of the Sam Proal Invitational.

Shaw had a run of three straight birdies from the 10th through the 12 holes (she started her round on the seventh) and had four birdies for the day. She is tied for second individually at the halfway point, just one stroke off the lead.

Meanwhile true freshmen Antonella Blanco and Mackenzie Carpenter continued their strong play, as both are tied for fifth after shooting 2-over 74s. Blanco's round included an eagle 3 on the 495-yard, par-5 11th hole at the Pueblo Country Club.

Carpenter's steady round included three birdies and four bogeys.

"We are so proud of Winnie, Mack and Anto, both Winnie and Mack had personal bests for collegiate golf and played really solid today," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said.

UCSS leads the tournament at 11-over 299, while MSU Denver is tied for second with tournament host CSU-Pueblo.

The 302 team score – both Isabel Botero and Sydney Eye shot 82 – is MSU Denver's best since the 2015 team carded a 12-over 300 on the opening day of the 2016 RMAC Championships, which stands as the program's second-best round ever. The record of 298 was set on the second day of the 2015 RMAC Championships, and came the day after the Roadrunners shot 301 en route to the conference crown.

"As a team we posted a good number that could have been even better," Ferguson said. "I'm excited to see what these girls can do tomorrow and in the spring. Hopefully the weather will hold out tomorrow, but we're looking forward to finishing the fall season off strong."
