SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Led by true freshman
Antonella Blanco's round of 1-over-par 73, the MSU Denver women's golf team is tied for fourth after the first day of the Wasatch Invitational.
Blanco had five birdies in a span of eight holes – including three in a row to start the charge – and is tied for second individually, four strokes behind leader Brady Turnquist of Biola (Calif.).
"Anto played awesome today," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "She hung in there so well and made five great birdies – that round could have been even better, but I'm proud of how she stayed tough in the weather."
The tournament was delayed by rain for about 90 minutes and MSU Denver completed its round about 7 ½ hours after it started.
As a team, the Roadrunners shot a 26-over 314 to tie both Colorado Mesa and Northwest Nazarene (Idaho). Biola leads the way at 304, while Colorado Christian shot 307 and Western Washington 308.
Winnie Shaw and
Isabel Botero both shot 80 for the MSU Denver, while
Sydney Eye and
Mackenzie Carpenter each carded 81s on the 6,200-yard Glenmoor Golf Club course.
"Overall the team was solid today," Ferguson said. "They never complained about the weather and just kept playing their game all day. We are in a great spot for tomorrow and will just need to be patient again in the weather."
