DENVER – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis programs have a busy week ahead starting with a men's dual on Friday followed by a four-day stint in California.
The Roadrunners have been at a slight disadvantage in preparing for the upcoming matches thanks to the heavy snowfall in the Denver area over the weekend.
"It's been difficult to get on the court this week because of the snow," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "We were finally able to practice (Wednesday) morning, which is the first time we have played since Friday."
The team has been shoveling snow instead of practicing over the last few days, but they are also taking this time to get some rest. They played seven matches in eight days before heading into the weekend, so they have welcomed the weekend rest as they prepare for another busy week.
The men will host Air Force on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex. They lost 7-0 against the Division I program in a pre-season exhibition match on Jan. 27 in Colorado Springs.
During the exhibition match up, No. 3 doubles pair
Daniel Llorente and
David Kijak won a tight match 7-5 to get the sole match win of the day.
Billy McDermott also put on a strong performance against the Falcons at No. 4 singles but fell short, 6-4, 7-5.
"Although we have had some tough loses, we are playing a lot of close matches," Graetz said. "We have been talking about how it doesn't necessarily matter how many points we win, but which points we win and executing on the big ones."
The men are coming off a big sweep of Dallas Baptist, and they will be looking for the continued strong performance of doubles partners
Jack McDermott and
Jeanloup Auzias, who are 6-0 this season. Another matchup to watch is
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla at No. 4 singles as he has played multiple three-set thrillers in his last few matches. Martinez-Morilla is 3-3 in singles this season.
The teams will head out to California at the end of weekend for a four-day road trip to face PacWest opponents. Both programs will start the trip off on Monday at 3:30 p.m. MDT against a strong tennis program in Azusa Pacific (Calif). Azusa is ranked No. 9 for the men and No. 11 for the women in Division II.
From there, they will travel to compete against Biola (Calif.) on Tuesday, Point Loma (Calif.) on Wednesday, and they will finish the trip against Concordia-Irvine (Calif.) on Thursday. Concordia-Irvine is another ranked opponent for both programs, with the men ranked No. 17 and the women ranked No. 22.
The Roadrunners' men are 2-5 thus far, and will be playing their first-ever PacWest duals.
The women (4-5) will be looking to add on to their 1-0 PacWest resume as they prepare for the California road trip over the next few days.
They will look towards
Brooklyn Ross (7-2) to continue her strong tennis play as they take on nationally ranked opponents. Ross went 2-0 over the short home stand, and she is continuing to develop her all-around play.
Gala Castello (5-3) and
Marie Cool (3-2) also put on dominant performances over their last two matches, and they will need to continue to execute on the big points to help MSU Denver earn victories the challenging competition.
"We are excited to get out to some warm weather and face high quality tennis," Graetz said.
