Box Score 2 Azusa, Calif. – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis teams suffered a conference loss against ranked Azusa Pacific (Calif.) to start their 4-match road trip.
The men took on a No. 9 ranked Azusa Pacific program that entered the day on a 4-match win streak. The Roadrunners suffered a 5-2 loss, with both of their wins coming from the singles courts.
David Kijak, No. 5 singles, and
Jeanloup Auzias, No. 6 singles, were able to secure singles wins by outlasting their opponents in intense 3-set matches. Kijak turned things around after dropping his first set 6-3 by winning the second set 6-3 to force the decisive third set, which he won 10-8.
Auzias started his match strong by winning a tight first set 7-6, but struggled in the second losing 6-3. He was able to bounce back in a nail biting third set winning it 15-13 to give the Roadrunners their second match point of the day.
The men got off to a rough start in their doubles matches after the duos of
Daniel Llorente/
Mateo Besada and Josh McDermott/
Jeanloup Auzias lost quickly at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Unfortunately, the No. 9 ranked Cougars were too much for the Roadrunners.
The women faced a similar fate to the men by losing their matchup against the No. 11 ranked team in Division II by a score of 6-1.
The sole Roadrunner point came at the racquet of
Gala Castello after she defeated Carolyn Brooner quickly 6-2, 6-4. Castello was able to break serve in the second to seal her fourth match of the season and second in a row.
Helena Steenberg tried to give the Roadrunners some hope at No. 2 singles by winning the first set 6-4, but she fell short after she dropped the second and third sets 6-4, 6-2.
The women were not able to get much going after they lost a heartbreaker on the doubles court, which put them down 0-1 right away.
Brooklyn Ross and
Isabel Heras were the only tandem to win their doubles match by winning the tiebreak 7-4 giving them the 7-6 victory. Steenberg and
Lilly Stienemeier battled in their match to force a tiebreak as well, but they ended up on the losing end after dropping the break 7-5, losing the game 7-6.
The Roadrunners will look to bounce back quickly as they look to take on PacWest competitor Biola (Calif.) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. (men) and 5 p.m. (women).
