SURPRISE, Ariz. – MSU Denver's
Brooklyn Ross has been named the Freshman of the Year in women's tennis by the Pacific West Conference, and is one of six Roadrunners to earn all-league honors in voting by coaches.
Ross was also named to the All-PacWest second team in singles and is also all-conference second team in doubles with partner
Isabel Heras. Meanwhile,
Helena Steenberg was named to the All-PacWest third team in singles.
For the men
Daniel Llorente is All-PacWest second team in singles and is all-league third team in doubles with partner
Mateo Besada.
Jack McDermott is All-PacWest third team in singles.
Ross went 12-5 in singles play this season prior to Wednesday's first-round dual against Hawaii-Hilo at the PacWest Tournament. She was a freshman again this season due to the NCAA ruling allowing players to retain their season of eligibility since last season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Combined over two seasons, she is 25-7.
Ross and Heras have gone 15-2 in doubles this season and are ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II by the ITA.
Steenberg has gone 11-8 in singles play this season and has a career mark of 36-22.
Llorente is just 6-9 this season but has played top competition at No. 1 singles while the Roadrunners played a high-caliber schedule. For his career he is 47-25.
He and Besada have gone 6-8 at No. 1 doubles.
McDermott moved took over the No. 2 singles spot for MSU Denver as a second-year freshman and has gone 5-10 against the challenging schedule.
