Box Score 4 DENVER – The MSU men's and women's tennis teams took on an eclectic mix of opponents Saturday, squaring off with junior college foe Seward County (Kan.) Community College in exhibition matches and Division III Colorado College in regular-season affairs.
The Seward County men, one of the top programs at the junior-college level, edged the Roadrunners 4-3 but MSU Denver cruised otherwise, with the men defeating Colorado College 6-1 and the women defeating Seward County 5-2 and Colorado College 7-0.
The women jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles points with wins from
Helena Steenberg/
Lilly Stienemeier and
Marie Cool/
Gala Castello. The Steenberg/Stienemeier tandem won 6-2 while Cool and Castello took the match to the end before winning 7-5.
The women continued to perform well on the singles court winning four of the six matches.
Isabel Heras and Stienemeier had two solid three-set victories.
The men almost pulled out a victory against the No. 3-ranked junior college team in the country.
The Roadrunners got off to a rough start by dropping the doubles point, but they were able to make some key improvements to keep the match close.
Jack McDermott and
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla battled at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to earn well-deserved victories and two of the Roadrunners' three points.
McDermott, after dropping the second set which would have given him the victory, regrouped in the third by winning the final set 6-4.
Martinez-Morilla was the opposite, and he quickly adapted to his opponent by winning the second set and finally sealing the victory by winning the third, 6-3.
The men had very little trouble against Colorado College, particularly
Jeanloup Auzias at No. 5 singles, where he cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
The women dropped only one game in three doubles matches and only one set in six singles contests.
Brooklyn Ross at No. 1, and Cool at No. 5, each sailed to a 6-1, 6-1 win.
