DENVER – The MSU Denver men's and women's tennis programs will be hosting their final home tennis matches of the spring season this weekend, which means it is time to celebrate the seniors.
The men will open with an exhibition match against Division I Northern Arizona (4-6) on Thursday at 2 p.m. before the celebrations begin on Friday. The two programs have never met before.
There are three seniors among on the MSU Denver men's team and
Mateo Besada,
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla and
Daniel Llorente on Friday before the match, along with
Helena Steenberg from the women's team. The dual at 2 p.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex.
Following the senior celebrations the Roadrunners will look to get down to business against their arch rival and PacWest foe Colorado Mesa. The Roadrunners and Mavericks are currently neck and neck in PacWest seeding for both the men and women, so this is not a match to be taken lightly.
"Mesa is always a big match, and both teams are getting worked up for it," Graetz said.
The men will be taking on a Colorado Mesa team that is 6-5 on the year and currently sitting in the eighth and final spot in the Division II West Region rankings. The MSU Denver men are currently in the seventh spot, according to rankings released March 23.
The Roadrunners won the last matchup on Apr. 5, 2019, 6-1, with big wins from all three of the seniors.
The women will also take on Colorado Mesa (7-9) on Friday at the Assembly Athletic Complex at 2 p.m., and will be looking to ride their current four-match win streak as they take on their rival. The Roadrunners, currently the No. 10 ranked regional team, will look to take down the No. 9 Mavericks like they did almost two years ago.
The last time these two teams met the Roadrunners walked away with a 7-0 victory back in 2019.
"We have been playing some of our best singles tennis in the last few matches," Graetz said. "Now all we need to do is to combine the two (singles and doubles)."
The women have had solid performances from
Helena Steenberg and
Gala Castello over the last few weeks. Steenberg has won four of her last five singles matches, with a big three-set win in her last match. Castello did not drop a set in last weekend's homestand, with one of her matches ending unfinished.
Both programs will end the weekend with a follow-up match at Colorado College at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Roadrunners were victorious last weekend, and they will be looking to do the same this weekend.
The men walked away with a 6-1 victory against CC, and the women earned the sweep winning the match 7-0.
"Although we won last weekend against CC we have no reason to get complacent," Graetz said.
