Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – For the fifth straight season, MSU Denver is going to the final of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball tournament.
The Roadrunners, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, had little trouble with No. 25 CSU-Pueblo in Friday's semifinal, a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-21.
"Yesterday (a four-set win over Colorado Christian), we had to get some stuff out and we were able to do that," MSU Denver coach
Jenny Glenn said. "We were much more in sync today and really attacked the match."
Next up is a matchup with No. 15 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at 6 p.m. Mines stunned second-ranked host Colorado Mesa in a 3-0 sweep in Friday's other semifinal.
"Hopefully the fifth time is a charm," Glenn said.
On Friday,
Kayla White had a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs, while
Ember Canty had five kills on .444 hitting with six blocks (two solos) to lead the way.
MSU Denver (15-1) hit only .170 – its second lowest total of the season – but held CSU-Pueblo to a mere .010, the second-lowest by an opponent this year.
The Roadrunners had seven service aces and eight total blocks.
"One thing we did well was defend their middles," Glenn said. "They usually hit for a high percentage, but our middles did an excellent job of studying them and they were prepared. We were able to get them out of system and slowed down their middles."
The Roadrunners played with the lead for the first two sets and in the third rallied late and finished strong.
"We chipped away and got back into it," Glenn said. "Yesterday we were a little out of system and then we would miss some serves when there were opportunities to score points. Today we had a few more runs."
That sets up the Saturday match with Mines, the team that beat MSU Denver in last year's RMAC final.
"We're in a good spot and just had a whole different mindset today," Glenn said. "I think we'll be able to carry that through."
