ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – MSU Denver had three players shoot in the 70s and stands in 10
th place after the opening day of the Nick Turner Invitational women's golf tournament.
After the first round,
Mackenzie Carpenter is tied for 19
th after shooting a 4-over-par 76,
Winnie Shaw is tied for 27
th at 5-over, and
Isabel Botero is tied for 36
th at 6-over.
Carpenter had a steady round with 14 pars and four bogeys, while Botero and Shaw each mixed in a birdie and nothing worse than bogey.
"Mack, Winnie and Isa all played really great rounds today," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "We are very proud of them."
As a team, the Roadrunners shot 24-over 312 and are only eight strokes out of fifth place. The 15-team field includes four nationally-ranked teams.
After a slow start, MSU Denver's season-long leader
Vaijayanti Bharkhada played her final eight holes at even par to finish at 9-over and complete the Roadrunners' four-player score.
Sydney Eye shot 82.
"Unfortunately we were only able to do short game yesterday because there was so much wind during the practice round," Ferguson said. "So the girls had only walked the course, and did some work around the greens. I think overall it was a steady round and tomorrow we can make some improvements to hopefully move up the leaderboard in this strong field.
"I'm proud of this group for sticking with it all the way to the finish."
