PALM DESERT, Calif. – A long winter appeared to have impacted MSU Denver at its first women's golf tournament in five months.
After the first day of the Augustana (S.D.) Spring Fling, the Roadrunners are in sixth place in the seven-team field after shooting a combined 60-over par at the Desert Willow Golf Resort. MSU Denver is only four shots out of fifth place and nine shots from fourth.
"Today was just very rusty, and overall we had a huge lack in commitment to the shots and our process," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "It's tough to come off only playing a few nine-hole rounds so far this year, but overall we had way too many mental mistakes."
Winnie Shaw is tied for 17
th overall after shooting 11-over 83 on the 6,003-yard course. She had two birdies and four pars on the day.
"Winnie hung in there really well today," Ferguson said. "She played much better than she scored. Overall, the team needs to trust the work they've done and make some good adjustments for tomorrow."
