Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – The 43
rd-ranked MSU Denver men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision Thursday at Concordia-Irvine (Calif.), while the Roadrunners' women's team lost by the same score to the Eagles.
The Roadrunners' men went beyond two sets to win three singles matches, but had first dropped the doubles point and ultimately were unable to recover.
Carlos Pinedo won at No. 2 1-6, 6-3, 6-3,
Jack McDermott won at No. 3 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 and
Andy Caruana won at No. 5 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).
"It was a tough match for the men," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "We didn't start ready in doubles and that hurt us. If we win the doubles, we win the match. I thought we had some guys that battled really hard, so it's unfortunate we couldn't get the win for them."
The Roadrunners' women also won three singles matches but couldn't overcome dropping the doubles point.
Ava Neuburger-Higby won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2,
Isabel Heras won at No. 2 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and
Monica Guarin won at No. 6 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
"It was a similar story for the ladies," Graetz said. "We didn't play a good doubles point. In singles I think they all battled hard, but we couldn't quite get it done. I'm proud of the ladies."
