PUEBLO, Colo. – Maya Ries broke the school record in the 100 hurdles on Saturday and is one of five MSU Denver athletes who advanced to Sunday finals with their performances in preliminary competitions at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
Ries qualified fourth in her event in 14.51 seconds. More than likely she was already the school-record holder in the event – a recent check of old MSU Denver athletic department files suggests that what was believed to be a school-record time of 14.67 run by Kim Hall in 1984 may have actually been 14.80, and that would mean the 14.73 Ries ran two weeks ago in Los Angeles was the most recent record.
That said, there's no doubt any more that the record is hers.
MSU Denver's other four qualifiers came from men's prelims.
In the 800,
Nick Nowlen and
Brandon Bodner qualified second and seventh, respectively, with times of 1:54.19 and 1:55.37.
Anthony Martinez qualified sixth in the 110 hurdles in 14.92.
And
Ethan Loper qualified eighth in the 200 in a season-best 21.94.
"It was another great day on the track," MSU Denver coach
Janis Christopher said. "Our athletes performed well across the board. Everyone seeded to make the finals did, and
Ethan Loper ran a season best to get into the finals as well."
Also of note, in the women's 200,
Kamryn Scott didn't qualify for the finals, but her 12
th-place time of 25.36 is the second-fastest of her career and ranks sixth all-time among all performances run by MSU Denver competitors in the event.
And
Audrey Orstead became MSU Denver's sixth-faster individual all-time by finishing 10
th in the 3,000 steeplechase in 12:06.21. Right behind her in 11
th to become the Roadrunners' eighth-fastest performer in the event was
Graciela Leal, who ran 12:19.60.
The RMAC Championships conclude Sunday beginning at 9:45 a.m.
"Tomorrow will be an exciting day with a lot of folks competing in the finals," Christopher said.
